My Journey Through BrainStation’s Web Development Bootcamp
As I reflect on my time at BrainStation, I’m filled with a sense of accomplishment and excitement for the future. Choosing this bootcamp was not a decision made lightly; it came after extensive research and careful consideration. I had heard great things about BrainStation from a few people I knew in the industry, and its strong reputation in Vancouver convinced me it was the right choice.
My Background Before BrainStation
I’ve always had a computer-centric background. From a young age, my parents encouraged the use of technology as a learning tool, making me tech-savvy early on. Despite this, teaching myself to code proved challenging. The vast landscape of programming can be daunting without a structured curriculum, and the motivation provided by an academic environment was exactly what I needed.
Before diving into web development, I had a diploma in Marketing Management from Langara College. Despite possessing a wide range of technical skills—such as video editing, photography, and graphic design—breaking into the marketing industry was tougher than anticipated. It often seemed to value self-promotion over actual skill. After several unsatisfactory job experiences, I decided to pivot to a field where skills were undeniably crucial. This led me to web development, where I could leverage my technical abilities in a more meaningful way.
The Challenges and Rewards
The bootcamp was challenging, especially given my limited prior knowledge of coding. The entry test was intimidating, and it soon became clear that many of my peers had more experience. However, the collaborative environment at BrainStation was incredibly supportive. The sense of community and willingness to help each other was one of the program’s highlights.
One of the most challenging aspects was the sheer volume of information covered in a short period. The intense pace required a lot of determination and resourcefulness. Yet, this intensity also made the learning process incredibly rewarding. The foundational skills in HTML, CSS, and Sass were visually gratifying and built a solid base for more complex topics like JavaScript and API integration.
Projects and Practical Application
Among all the units, the final capstone project was the most rewarding. We had two weeks to work on it, which, in the context of the bootcamp, was a luxury. This project allowed us to apply everything we had learned and to create something unique. It was an opportunity to showcase our skills and creativity, and it solidified my understanding of web development.
Skills and Future Goals
My understanding of web development has evolved tremendously. The bootcamp taught me that being a developer is as much about a way of thinking as it is about writing code. It’s about solving problems and tackling puzzles, a mindset that extends beyond coding and into everyday life.
I feel particularly confident in my design skills, enhanced by my deepened understanding of development. I now see myself as a versatile professional, capable of bridging the gap between design and development. The Career Accelerator Program at BrainStation also prepared me well for the job market, offering invaluable insights into resumes, cover letters, and interview preparation.
Looking Ahead
My future goals are open-ended but ambitious. I aim to either find a position where my skills are genuinely valued or to start my own business. BrainStation has equipped me with the skills and confidence needed to pursue these goals.
For anyone considering BrainStation, I can’t recommend it enough. The experience is demanding but incredibly rewarding. Stay committed, and even if you feel burned out towards the end, continue to work hard with the employment advisors until you land that job.
